Storbåt Lyra at Tervasaaren Tynnyri -race and Tall Ships Day

25/10/2025

On October 11th, 2025, the Helsinki Traditional Sailors took to the water for the Tervasaaren Tynnyri -race aboard Lyra, skippered by Vera Anttila. Now in its 38th year, Tervasaaren Tynnyri is one of the great traditional sailing races for historic vessels.

The winds were strong and the spray was generous on a low-sided boat, but the crew rose to the occasion. Despite the conditions, it was wonderful to be able to join this traditional event on Lyra. The day was already a memorable one, and then it got even better, when at the evening celebration, Lyra was announced as the winner of race.

A huge thank you to everyone who sailed with us and made the day so special!

The fun didn't stop there. The following Sunday (October 12th), Lyra joined the Tall Ships Day (Purjelaivapäivä), with traditional ships gathering at Halkolaituri and having their doors open to visitors. We welcomed visitors aboard to learn about the storbåt type vessel and the work of the Traditional Sailors of Helsinki.

We also ran a popular key chain workshop, where visitors could craft their own knotted key chains from tar rope or pick up a ready-made one to support the association. Despite the chilly weather, the turnout was great and the atmosphere was anything but cold. Conversations flowed, curiosity was everywhere, and it was a joy to share our passion for traditional sailing with so many interested people.
